A fresh, green fragrance like wild summer herbs growing, Lily of the Valley is native to European and Asian woodlands from the Mediterranean to the Arctic. This hardy flower is one of the few perennials able to prosper in deep shade.

History
Lily of the Valley was first cultivated in 1420. The perfume industry utilizes the flowers and the leaves were first prescribed medically during World War I to reduce blood pressure of gassing victims.

Origin
Supposedly, the Lily of the Valley sprang from Eve’s tears as God expelled her from the Garden of Eden. It’s pristine white color is associated with the Virgin Mary and is considered the fifth object (after something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue) that a bride should carry.

Description
Lily of the valley has weeping, white flowers that form a ladder of bells.

Symbolism
Lily of the Valley symbolizes purity and sweetness. Its low physical stature associates it with humility.

Fun Fact
The name “Lily of the Valley” is derived from the Latin “convallis” (valley) and “majalis” (May-flowering). May Day in France finds Lily of the Valley bells adorning lapels.

Historically associated with the St. Patrick's Day holiday, a shamrock is simply a common name for a clover. In fact, a shamrock classifies a variety of plants belonging to the genus Trifolium, from the Latin meaning "having three leaves."

• The plant most commonly referred to as shamrock is White Clover or Trifolium repens
• The Irish word "seamrog," from which shamrock comes, means "little clover"

How did "Vanilla" get its name?

The word vanilla, derived from the Spanish word vaina (vaina itself meaning sheath or pod), simply translates as 'little pod.' The pod in a vanilla plant holds the beans that are extracted for consumption.

Where does Vanilla come from?

Vanilla is a flavoring derived from orchids of the genus Vanilla, primarily from the Mexican species, flat-leaved vanilla. Pre-Columbian Mesoamerican peoples cultivated the vine of the vanilla orchid, called tlilxochitl by the Aztecs, and Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés is credited with introducing both vanilla and chocolate to Europe in the 1520s.

Great Home Tip with Vanilla 

Need to freshen up the aroma at home? Put two caps full of vanilla extract in a coffee cup, then place it in the oven at 300 degrees for one hour. Within twenty minutes the entire home will smell wonderful. This is actually a common realtor trick used to prepare a home for prospective buyers.
